The Tara Festival and Camel Races 2024 was an epic weekend getaway that offered an unforgettable experience. Driving from Brisbane to Tara, Queensland, is an exciting journey that takes you through picturesque landscapes. The route covers approximately 306.3 kilometers and typically takes around 3 hours and 34 minutes by car. As you head west from Brisbane, you’ll pass charming towns, rolling hills, and open plains. It’s a small town known for hosting the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races. This event is a must-attend for anyone seeking an adventure-filled escape.  This vibrant event combines professional camel races with non-stop multicultural entertainment, attracting around 10,000 people who camp across thousands of campsites. The festival took place from August 2nd to 4th, 2024, and promised an unforgettable experience for visitors. So we pack our caravan, hit the road, and got ready for a memorable adventure. 🚐🌄🐪

 

Upon arriving on Wednesday, we set up camp at the back of the racetrack, after we had to move, due to setting up in a group booking area. (No real signage and poor communication didn’t help). Jenny, from the Camping Adventure Crew, was with us as well. Many other eager campers had already settled in. Remember, the best campsite isn’t just about convenience; it’s about creating memories, soaking in the beauty, and finding solace in nature’s embrace. Setting up a campsite in the great outdoors is a delightful experience that combines adventure, relaxation, and a connection to nature. Settling in for an afternoon of camping was a delightful experience, being surrounded by the serene beauty of nature, with the sun casting a warm glow over your campsites, firepits lighting up. It’s a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

 

The next day, we woke up to a crisp, frosty morning, with several campers starting an early fire to keep warm. After a hearty breakfast, we ventured into the town to explore the local shops and stock up on supplies. 

Tara, Queensland, boasts a few charming local shops that cater to the community’s needs, but if you’re looking for lunch that will last you ‘til dinner, drop into the Tara Cafe in Day Street. This cafe is the jack of all trades, combining a lolly shop, bakery, and roadhouse all in one, where you can order a mega breaky or hamburger for lunch, and a bag of goodies for dessert. For dinner during the week, a classic steak or parmy is on the menu at the Commercial Hotel, and on a Friday and Saturday night, the Tara Bowls Club has more options like bangers and mash to warm you up in the cooler months. The Modern Trend is delightful boutique that stocks a variety of clothing for ladies, men, and children. FoodWorks is a reliable supermarket, and one of the best stocked, most friendly staff that out-doe’s any supermarket in Brisbane.

Friday was filled with excitement as we witnessed the local School's Book Club Parade. One of the most unique and entertaining events at the festival, participants dress up as their favorite book characters and paraded through the streets of Tara, showcasing their creativity and imagination. From Harry Potter to Alice in Wonderland, the parade is a colorful and joyful celebration of literature and storytelling. This year students dressed in costumes representing different countries. 

We then checked out the vibrant markets opposite the commercial hotel and at the Museum, before heading to the festival grounds as they opened at 5 pm, with a bang, as a dazzling display of fireworks illuminated the sky, setting the stage for an unforgettable weekend ahead. The atmosphere was electrifying as attendees gathered to witness the mesmerizing Aussie Wildfire performance and enjoy the tunes from the Full Face Helmet DJ, who kept the crowd dancing late into the night.

Saturday was a day filled with exciting activities and entertainment for all ages. Attendees had the chance to experience the art of Camp Oven Cooking, showcasing traditional Australian culinary techniques. The highlight of the day was the thrilling Camel Races, where spectators cheered on their favorite hump-backed contenders as they raced towards the finish line. Yabby Races added an element of quirky fun to the festivities, providing a unique twist on the traditional racing experience.

Throughout the day, visitors perused the vibrant markets, admired the intricate Wood Carving displays, and were serenaded by the soulful tunes of Alvin Rostant Babash Band. Roving entertainment kept the energy high, while fashion enthusiasts participated in the Fashion on the Field competition, showcasing their Outback-inspired style.

As the sun set, the festivities continued with a lively performance by Murphy's Pigs, bringing a touch of Irish charm to the Australian Outback. The night culminated in electrifying performances by Zac and George, Dee Jaye Bux, and the legendary Lee Kernaghan, whose music echoed through the night, leaving attendees with memories to last a lifetime.

Sunday dawned with a fresh sense of anticipation as the camel races resumed and the yabby races continued to draw cheers from the crowd. Country markets offered a unique shopping experience, filled with handmade crafts and locally sourced goods. Cultural stage shows provided insight into the rich heritage of the region, while sheep shearing demonstrations showcased the skills of the Outback's hardworking shearers.

The lazy leis provided a laid-back atmosphere where attendees could relax and soak in the sights and sounds of the festival before packing up on Monday morning for the journey back to Brisbane, a sea of memories and experiences to cherish along the way.

 

The Tara Festival and Camel Races 2024 was a celebration of community, culture, and the spirit of the Outback. As we bid farewell to this unforgettable event, we carry with us the memories of laughter, camaraderie, and the magic of the Australian bush. With over 2000 caravan sites available for booking, the Tara Festival and Camel Races ensured that all attendees had a comfortable and convenient place to stay during the event. The caravan site provided a perfect home base for exploring everything the festival had to offer, from the exciting races to the vibrant markets and entertainment.

One of the standout performers at the festival was Lochie from Longreach, a talented young musician who wowed the crowd with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Lochie's performance was a highlight of the event, capturing the hearts of everyone in the audience and leaving a lasting impression with his powerful music.

The festival also featured some of the best music acts in the country, with headline performances by Australian country music legend Lee Kernaghan and the dynamic duo Zac and George. Lee Kernaghan brought his iconic hits and infectious energy to the stage, while Zac and George impressed the crowd with their unique sound and captivating stage presence. The performances by these talented artists were the perfect way to close out each evening of the festival, leaving the audience cheering for more.
