Walking
for a Cause: A Day of Volunteering at the Sunshine Coast Bloody Long Walk
The day
started early at Trickle Park in Coolum, as volunteers gathered to support the
Sunshine Coast Bloody Long Walk, raising awareness and funds for Mitochondrial
Disease Research. Mitochondrial Disease is a rare genetic disorder that affects
the body's ability to produce energy, often resulting in debilitating symptoms
that impact multiple organ systems. The enthusiasm and dedication of the
participants and volunteers alike were truly inspiring, united in their mission
to make a difference in the fight against this challenging condition.
As the
first wave of walkers set off, the air was filled with a sense of purpose and
determination. It was heartwarming to see so many people come together for a
common cause, fueled by their passion to create positive change. Amongst the
volunteers, old friendships were rekindled and new connections were formed,
creating a supportive and welcoming atmosphere at the start line.
After
the initial wave of excitement, we decided to head to Maroochydore for a
well-deserved breakfast at Murray's on Sixth, a local favorite known for its
delicious food and friendly ambiance. The big breakfast, Canadian waffles, and pup
Shari having a puppuccino with biscuits fueled us for the day ahead, while the
vibrant buzz of the café and the warmth of the staff added to our morning
experience. Murray's on Sixth truly embodies the essence of a local hangout,
with regulars stopping by for their morning coffee and a chat, creating a sense
of community and belonging.
Once
refueled, our journey continued to Nelson Park in Alexandra Headlands, where we
set up pit-stop 6, the final rest stop before the finish line. Our task was
clear: to ensure that every walker who passed through felt supported,
encouraged, and motivated to complete their journey with a smile. Armed with
playful props, including animal heads, bubble blowers, and funny glasses, we
brought laughter and joy to the weary participants, reminding them of the
importance of perseverance and camaraderie.
Volunteering
at the Sunshine Coast Bloody Long Walk was not only a rewarding experience in
giving back to the community but also a valuable opportunity for personal
growth and fulfillment. Studies have shown that volunteering can have a
positive impact on mental health, fostering feelings of purpose, connection,
and overall well-being. As we look forward to the upcoming walk in Brisbane in
a couple of weeks, we carry with us the memories of a day filled with kindness,
laughter, and the joy of coming together for a meaningful cause.
