Exploring Port Chambers on our P&O New Zealand Cruise

Exploring Port Chambers on our P&O New Zealand Cruise

Our P&O New Zealand Cruise had been an incredible journey filled with breathtaking scenery and unforgettable experiences. As we arrived at our last port, Port Chambers, we couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what the day had in store for us. Located close to Dunedin, this port offered the perfect opportunity to explore the charming town and its surroundings.

Since this was our second time in Dunedin, we decided to steer away from the typical tourist tours and instead opted for a leisurely walk around the local port of Port Chambers. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Port Chalmers, the main town nearby, was a haven for heritage attractions, charming cafes, and art galleries.

Our first stop was the Union Café, where we treated ourselves to some freshly roasted coffee. The café exuded a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to start our exploration of Port Chalmers. Strolling through the streets, we couldn't help but admire the beautifully restored buildings from the late 1800s, which had been transformed into cafes, restaurants, and quirky shops selling vintage clothing and collectibles.

After a few hours of exploring, we made our way back to the ship, which was surprisingly quiet as most passengers were still on their shore tours. Taking advantage of the peaceful atmosphere, we indulged in the ship's pools and spas, enjoying some relaxation time before the crowds returned.

Unfortunately, our plans to visit the Doubtful Sounds and Milford Sounds were foiled by rough seas, and the captain made the decision to head back north through Cook Strait. Although we were disappointed to miss out on these stunning destinations, it gave us a reason to return to New Zealand in the future and explore them.

As we sailed through Cook Strait, the sea conditions became rough for a couple of hours, but eventually calmed down. The remaining three sea days back to Brisbane were filled with entertainment and fun. We spent much of our time in the Encounter Hotel, engaging in games of Uno, snakes and ladders, and trivia. We also had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with fellow cruisers we had met on shore excursions.

In the Marquee, the ship's theater, we were treated to some fantastic shows. "Seven," a visually stunning performance based on the Seven Deadly Sins, captivated our attention and transported us into a world of fantasy. The interactive gameshow called Perfect Match had us in fits of laughter as participants tried to match their partner's answers. It was a hilarious experience that added even more joy to our cruise.

The last night on the ship was made even more memorable with the finals of "The Voice," a thrilling adaptation of the popular TV show. The Voice of the Ocean invited talented individuals to compete in karaoke heats, with the chosen contestants progressing to the grand finale live show in the Marquee Theatre.

Our sea days were calm and the weather remained pleasant as we made our way back to Brisbane. The disembarkation process was quick and efficient, allowing us to reflect on the incredible cruise we had just experienced.

Although our plans to visit the Doubtful Sounds and Milford Sounds were dashed, our time in Port Chambers, combined with the onboard entertainment and relaxation, made this P&O New Zealand Cruise one to remember. We departed with a desire to return to New Zealand and explore the places we missed, knowing that another incredible adventure awaits us in the future.

Exploring Lyttelton on Our P&O New Zealand Cruise

Our fifth port of call on the P\&O New Zealand Cruise brought us to the charming town of Lyttelton. This day was set to be our biggest adventure yet, filled with scenic drives, cultural exploration, and breathtaking views.

We started our day bright and early, eager to disembark the ship and meet our tour bus waiting for us in Lyttelton. The scenic drive towards Christchurch was a treat in itself, with a lookout point offering us a glimpse of the stunning surroundings. As we entered Christchurch, the marks of the earthquake were still visible, a stark reminder of the resilience of the people rebuilding their city.

Once in Christchurch, we embarked on a journey through the city's highlights. We hopped on the tram loop, allotted two hours to explore the city at our leisure. After a few stops, we decided to wander through the streets, immersing ourselves in the local culture. From browsing market stalls to enjoying live entertainment in the main square, Christchurch offered a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Our next stop was Punting in the Avon, where we rejoined our tour group for a tranquil ride along the river. The tour guide shared fascinating insights as we glided down the Avon, surrounded by the city's natural beauty.

The grand finale of our tour was a trip up the Gondola, promising panoramic views of Christchurch and its surroundings. As we ascended the mountain in the cable car, we were met with breathtaking vistas that included a view of our ship docked at Lyttelton Port. The experience was truly unforgettable, offering a bird's eye view of the stunning landscapes below.

Returning to Lyttelton, we took the express tunnel back to the port, marveling at the sight of our cruise ship waiting for us. Back on board, we celebrated our day of exploration with a few afternoon cocktails, reminiscing about the incredible experiences we had in Lyttelton and Christchurch.

Embarking on a Cruise through New Zealand: Discovering Napier and Wellington

Embarking on a Cruise through New Zealand: Discovering Napier and Wellington

Welcome to the next chapter of our thrilling New Zealand cruise adventure! Our third port of call was the vibrant city of Napier, followed by the bustling capital of Wellington. Join us as we explore these exciting destinations, providing guides and advice along the way.

Upon our arrival in Napier, we were met with beautiful weather as the sun shone brightly above us. Since we only had six hours in port and didn't have anything pre-booked, we decided to make the most of our time exploring the city. We hopped on the free shuttle bus, which conveniently took us into town and dropped us off outside the information center.

Our first stop was Tennyson Street and Herschell Street, where we stumbled upon the Art Deco Centre. This incredible center not only houses a shop filled with funky Art Deco trinkets, clothing, and souvenirs, but it also showcases the iconic Art Deco architecture that defines the city. As we walked the streets, we marveled at the angular overhangs, vibrant color combinations, and the proud labels displaying the names and dates of each building. It was a visual feast and a step back in time.

While exploring the city, we couldn't help but notice the absence of the vintage cars that greeted us during our previous visit. Nevertheless, we made the most of our time, with Kim even finding a couple of outfits to add to her wardrobe. As the clock ticked closer to our departure time, we reluctantly made our way back to the ship, with enough time to enjoy drinks and a refreshing swim before the other cruisers returned from their tours.

Our next port of call was the vibrant and windy city of Wellington. This time, we didn't have any specific plans as we were planning to meet up with Kim's friend, Debbie. We hopped on the free shuttle bus, which conveniently whisked us into the city center within minutes. From there, it was just a short 10-minute walk to the Wellington Cable Car, a must-visit attraction in the city.

Following our own advice from our previous cable car ride, we positioned ourselves at the back of the cart to enjoy the best views as we ascended to the top. Once at the summit, we patiently waited for Debbie in the cafe, taking in the breathtaking vistas of Wellington. Together, we embarked on a leisurely walk along the Wellington Wharf, exploring various markets and even witnessing dragon boat races in action.

Afterwards, we strolled through the city center, immersing ourselves in the unique boutiques that Wellington has to offer. With the day coming to a close, we made our way back to the top of the cable car for a scenic trip back down. The free shuttle bus conveniently transported us back to the ship, allowing us to relax and prepare for the night's feature show.

Napier’s evening's entertainment was a magical and comedic performance by Jared Fell, leaving us in stitches. It was a fantastic way to end the day in Napier, a city that truly showcases the beauty and energy of New Zealand.

Welington’s feature show was "One", a joyful musical journey the we are reminded that despite the challenges, there is beauty all around and that love really is all we need.

As we reflect on our time in Napier and Wellington, we're reminded that every port of call on our cruise offers unique experiences and memories. From the vibrant Art Deco architecture of Napier to the windy charm of Wellington, our journey through New Zealand continues to delight and surprise us.

Join us as we set sail for our next destination, where new adventures and wonders eagerly await. Stay tuned for the next installment of our cruise through beautiful New Zealand!
