Sunrise Currumbin Beach

Sunrise Currumbin Beach, Gold Coast. Queensland Australia

“Get outside. Watch the sunrise. Watch the sunset. How does that make you feel? Does it make you feel big or tiny? Because there’s something good about feeling both.“

A sunrise is God’s way of saying, ‘Let’s start again. Every day a million miracles begin at sunrise. The Gold Coast's has many iconic beaches that are beautiful at any time, but a sunrise is particularly special. The light across the surf and sand is magical, and the night owls have not yet arrived. We took a walk from Elephant Rock to Currumbin Alley return. Currumbin Alley is usually a calm stretch of water that has a wide sandy beach at low tide and is popular for surfers to enter the ocean.

The area is frequented by long borders, paddle borders and learners as the waves are easily accessed from the beach with the break only a short paddle away. Currumbin Alley ends at Currumbin Rock which provides a great photography session to capture the sun rising over the water. Soft sand, rolling waves, and endless sunshine, what’s not to love?

If you’re on the hunt for a new breakfast spot by the stellar seaside with beautiful dishes, you can’t go past Barefoot Barista. The new café fully utilises its cute, elevated porch area to full capacity, with a good number of high tables outside, you‘ll be dazzled by the surf and catching ocean breezes without even trying. Inside it’s a snug affair with cosy bench seating for those who feel like a break from the heat or for when the heavens decide to open. A modern and open barista area and kitchen mean you can see the talented people hard at work. The menu will look familiar to those who are long-term fans of the other venues, giving you ample options to push the boat out and have yourself either an extravagant breaky, brunch or lunch.

Famed for their Crispy Potato Hash, make no mistake; this is some seriously delicious carbohydrates people. Caffeine-loving folk will be pleased to know the easy-drinking brews are from Gabriel Coffee, but there’s also a selection of cold-pressed juices, protein smoothies and kombucha to sip pre-10:00 am. So, if after a long week at work you just want to spend your weekend sipping lattes with your pooch, then this Café is for you.

We started the day with a big deep breath, the salt air, fused with a healthy breakfast does wonders. We headed just up the road to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary so Kim could feed some lorikeets. Every day at 8am and 4pm, you can enjoy the experience of feeding several wild lorikeets. Colourful birds that are not shy of humans and like to eat right from your hands or take a rest on your head and shoulders. These are the birds which founded the sanctuary over 70 years ago and generations later they still know the exact time and place to come feed. With no entry to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary required, this amazing experience is free to watch and a gold coin donation for feeding.

Other Things To Consider

The Salt Mill is a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop tucked away in the retro line-up of shops on Pacific Pde, across the road from beach at Currumbin.

The popular coffee shop is known for its great coffee, fresh juices and tasty breakfast and lunch options. Step through the cool industrial door and the friendly crew will serve you latte froth as smooth as silk, smoothies as nutritious as they are delicious, and acai and pitaya bowls as tasty as they are healthy.

Starting at the Tugun Surf Life Saving Club you can do Currumbin Oceanway 3.7km walkway path from Tugun to Palm Beach.  You walk north until you come to Flat Rock Creek, cross over and continue along to Elephant Rock. One of the southern Gold Coast’s most well-known landmarks, why not take a few extra minutes to climb the 61 stairs to the top of Elephant Rock, where you can enjoy the lookout and take some great photos too.

Featuring an intriguing display of local and international artworks, the Swell Sculpture Festival is a fantastic free exhibition that turns Currumbin Beach into an outdoor art gallery in September every year. Open all hours, you can walk amongst the sculptures under the warming spring sun or see them lit up under the southern sky. Over ten days there are twilight walks, talks from the artists, a Public Art Forum and the Swell Smalls Gallery for smaller pieces.

So head down to Currumbin Beach to be inspired, amused, uplifted and touched by the artistic displays.

While in the area we always drop into Ambarella Fine Foods, which is located in Burleigh’s busy Homespace, alongside TK Maxx and Harvey Norman. Ambarella is part deli, part grocer and part café and celebrates great food and quality produce. Kim love the salads and soups and other healthy choices
