Road Trip To Mt Tamborine, Local Markets, Queensland. Australia

The awesome weather isn’t the only motivation you need to bounce into Queensland this winter, with a stack of events, festivals and markets popping up all over Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. There's nothing better than cruising the Gold Coast Hinterland on a crisp 2 degree winters morning to check out the local markets. Sunday was our first chance to check out Mt Tamborine markets.  

Tamborine Mountain, the jewel in the crown of the Gold Coast Hinterland, has it all – rainforests and bush walks, cosy cottages to stay, quirky restaurants, cafes and tea rooms and country pubs with views, arts and craft shops galore, a Sky Walk, wineries, glow worm caves, a distillery and a whole lot of gorgeous pockets to explore. We drove in a northerly direction along the Main Western Road, stopping at 2 scenic areas, the Hang Glider Launch & Lookout and Rotary Lookout to take advantage of the view, along with numerous others with the same idea. 

The Tamborine Mountain State School Markets are held the last Sunday of the month offering a diverse, character-filled monthly market overflowing with things to adore. You’ll find up to 130 stalls from local artists, crafts people, fresh produce, plants, books, clothing, vintage items, collectibles, jewellery, bric a brac, candles, crystals.... the list is endless and always changing. While some love the thrill of a scroll and shop online, it can't replace the feeling you get when youet out and about spending a few hours exploring a market and discovering Etsy-in-real-life knick-​knacks.

 

Kim dropped into Julie Blackley at Blossom's Resin Tumblers & Homewares, and checked out her unique and customised resin tumblers and homewares including a wide variety of store designs and added a couple of more to her collection. Whether you are browsing or buying, come along and treat yourself to some of their deliciously tasty food while enjoying the live music and friendly mountain atmosphere. It’s a great way to spend your Sunday Morning.

MAKERS’ MARKET on the Mountain: 6-8 Knoll Rd – 1st Sunday of the month 8am to 1pm

TAMBORINE TWILIGHTMARKET: 132 Long Road – 2nd Saturday of the month 4.30pm to 8.30pm

TAMBORINE MOUNTAINCOUNTRY MARKET: 386-398 Main Western Road – 2nd Sunday of the month 7.30am to 1.30pm

TAMBORINE TWILIGHTMARKET: 132 Long Road – 4th Saturday of the month 4.30pm to 8.30pm

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN STATESCHOOL MARKET: cnr Curtis and Long Roads – Last Sunday of the month 7am to 1pm 

 

After the markets we headed to Mount Tamborine Vineyard and Winery, which can be found right in the middle of Gallery walk at the peak of the mountain for brunch.  The boutique winery has won many awards over the years and provides guests with a range of tasting opportunities, a tasty restaurant, and an on-site gift shop. One of the best ways to discover some of the unique flavours of the Mount Tamborine Vineyard and Winery is at its welcoming cellar door. Here you can hear first-hand about how the winery creates its fabulous flavours, learning about the history of the region and understanding the wine a bit better from the friendly staff members.  

 

After filling up on the divine food, Kim browses the gift shop. Known as the tourist strip on Tamborine Mountain, there are over 60 shops to wander into during your day adventure. This shopping precinct is a must-visit if you want to pick up a unique something to take home with you. Set against a backdrop of lush rainforest, it also offers incredible views out across the surrounding scenery and is a great place to start exploring everything Mount Tamborine has to offer. Capanart and Rivendale Galleries are the artistic highlights of the Gallery Walk with jeweller Matthew West also having a studio on the strip, alongside a tonne of other local artists who have their work featured in a range of shops. The walk, which spans 400m along both sides of Long Road is dotted with quirky cottages, galleries cafes and boutiques. Here you’ll find locally-made fudge as well as Mt Tamborine wine tasting and a cellar door and café. There’s liqueurs and fortified wines grown and manufactured locally, pottery, crystals and lavender products, cuckoo and grandfather clocks and local honey. You can easily spend half a day cruising the Tamborine Gallery Walk before filling your belly with local treats.

 

Traveling locally means supporting local businesses, which is crucial to developing a strong local economy. In this pandemic, this is more important than ever.           You will feel refreshed. The feelings you get when you discover a new landscape in another country also happen when you make a new discovery in your own backyard. Put small, local businesses at the forefront of your mind — and you’re shopping list. It’s important to remember that the cheapest option isn’t always the best.
