Snapper Rocks to Kirra Beach Walk, Gold Coast, Queensland. Australia

Coolangatta is Queensland’s most southerly town and a portal to both the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales. A little more laid-back than its glitzier companions on the Gold Coast, Coolangatta has uncrowded beaches, relaxing waterfront promenades and weekly markets on the foreshore. It’s a popular spot for families, as well as surfers who have heard rumours of the legendary swell that breaks on Coolangatta’s Point Danger. Coolangatta is one of the most vibrant, abundant, unspoiled destinations in the world. Its sub-tropical climate is perfect for outdoor fun all year round, with plenty of sunshine and many different vantage points, lookouts and walking tracks to explore the surroundings.

The Ocean Walkway incorporates Point Danger, Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, Coolangatta, Kirra Point, Kirra, Bilinga, Tugun, Currumbin, Currumbin Alley and Currumbin Creek estuary. The 18km round trip captures the best of the Southern Gold Coast's coastline yet can be shortened to suit whatever suburb you're visiting.

This morning we did an easy Snapper Rocks to Kirra 5km round trip. Starting from the most famous surf break on the coast, Snapper Rocks is an iconic spot offers amazing surf and gorgeous views. It’s a chance to capture some really iconic shots of the Gold Coast like surfers, lifeguard towers and beautiful blue water. There are a few nice places to grab a bite to eat or sit and soak it all in with a cold drink or lap up the afternoon sun out on the sand and in the water.

We headed past the Rainbow Bay Surf Club, where there’s a playground for kids to enjoy if you want to take a moment to savour the peace. Moving forward you then reach Greenmount Hill, Hill Street, Greenmount Surf Club with views to the east, Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks surf beaches. To the north, the surf beaches of Greenmount, Coolangatta, Kirra and all the way up the coast to Surfers Paradise and South Stradbroke Island. To the west, glimpses of the McPherson Range incorporating Springbrook National Park, Currumbin Valley and Mt Tallebudgera, all part of Australia’s Green Cauldron. Greenmount beach leads into a headland breaking the sandy beachfront and on top of the hill is Pat Fagan Park featuring a wonderful viewing platform.

We then hit Coolangatta Beach, which has always been a favourite holiday destination. Like the shifting sands on the beach, Coolangatta’s Stand Shopping and Dining hub are constantly changing. Formerly known as Showcase on the Beach, the completely revamped centre takes up almost a block of beachfront land, with a number of venues enjoying views of the waves. The Black Sheep Espresso Baa was one of the first new cafés to open and a great pitstop for a coffee.

From the Stand we hit the boardwalk below the Kirra Hill, You can walk up Garrick Street for views to the east, back over the best surf beaches and point breaks in Australia, Coolangatta, Greenmount, Snapper Rocks. You have stunning views south, over Coolangatta precinct and into the Tweed and to the north, over Kirra Point and up the Golden Four Beaches of Kirra, Bilinga, Tugun and Currumbin. Kirra's iconic timber boardwalk is going to be ripped up and replaced with a concrete path which opens in early March 2020.

 

Kirra is the spiritual home of surfing on the Gold Coast, and if the surf’s pumping, Kirra is the place to be. The local surfing spot of greats including Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew and Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo, Kirra has a reputation for producing challenging barrels, and also smaller waves for beginners. We watched the surfers from the boardwalk shelter and returned back to Snaper Rocks.
