Breakfast and Markets, Maroochydore Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Australia

Maroochydore oh how we love thee. Maroochydore is the cultural capital of the Sunshine Coast where you can enjoy an ocean dip during the day and a cocktail at night with its funky cafes, multicultural cuisine and thriving live music scene. Maroochydore is, in many ways, the heart of the Sunshine Coast. A long walking track runs from Sunshine Plaza to Cotton Tree and through Alexandra Headland, right up to Mooloolaba, and is always pulsing with people stolling, jogging  and cycling along the waterfront. We took the 1 hour early morning drive to Maroochydore first stopping at Murrays Café, Sixth Avenue, for breakfast.

Murray's Café is a popular little oasis well patronised by regulars and warmly welcoming to visitors. Its north facing aspect ensures plenty of sunshine so large umbrellas shelter the outdoor tables with a couple of longer tables to cater for groups or individual diners. It is dog-friendly, child-friendly, bike-friendly, Situated well away from the bustle.

And most importantly they have homemade doggie treats and puppuccinos for your four legged friends. There’s nothing like a Sunday morning breakfast with your little mate panting along, and as dog lovers ourselves, we know it can be stressful picking an eatery that won’t oust you for sharing your bacon with the pooch. Our breakfasts were absolutely beautiful; the staffs were friendly and welcoming and create a great atmosphere. We highly recommend the cafe and would drop back in when we are up the Sunshine Coast area again. We then headed just up the road to the Cotton Tree Markets.

The Sunshine Coast's most creative come to Cotton Tree each Sunday for the local markets. For 25 years the Cotton Tree Markets have featured local artisans, designers and inventors selling their own unique and creative works. It’s been years since we checked out these markets, and noticed a big difference in the locals shops surrounding the markets. The Cotton Tree Markets run every Sunday, 7am to 12noon in Kings St. It's quite small by the standard set by some markets such as Eumundi or even Yandina, but the supporting café’s, boutiques and beach make it more appealing.

We noticed there were plenty of handmade goods for sale here - from arts and crafts, jewellery, clothing, hoola hoops, children's toys and even herbal salts. If you're not looking for anything creative, you'll also find some other Sunday market staples such as fresh baked goods, second hand books, live music and something for the garden. When you're done shopping you'll be happy to see a majority of the usual stores on Kings St still open for business.

After the markets we took the scenic drive south past Alexandra Headland, which is popular amongst families and surfers. Then passing The Surf Club Mooloolaba, which is located on the shores of Mooloolaba Beach, perfect coastal spot to eat, drink and be entertained.

DISCLAIMER: We went to the Murray’s Cafe on our own free will and paid in full for our meals and coffee. We think this place is another real gem in the Sunshine Coast and you should check it out for yourself.
